The boxer was originally bred in Germany in the late 19th century from the Old English Bulldog and the now extinct Bullenbeiser. They are a stocky, medium sized, short haired dog with a very distinctive head of a broad, short skull and a square muzzle. Colors are fawn or brindle frequently with white markings. Boxers which are mostly white are not uncommon either.
Boxers are an energetic, playful and bright breed and tend to be very good with children making them popular as family dogs. They are not aggressive or a vicious breed but is an instinctive guardian of its family and requires proper socialisation. Due to their strength and intelligence they have been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind and police dogs. During times of war, the military was quick to recognise their role as pack carriers, messenger dogs and attack and guard dogs.
